There are times when doing it yourself simply won’t cut it. That’s when it’s time to turn to the professionals to help us out with our complex renovation projects. Here at Koncept Design and Build, we love to help our customers create homes with a personal touch.
If you’re generally happy with the design and features in your home and simply want to give a few rooms a new lease on life, you may want to consider captaining your home project yourself. There’s an abundance of DIY information on the internet, so how do you know which ones are the best? Well, as a general rule of thumb, sites with authority on Google have a huge following and provide quality content that keeps them high up on the search results.
As well as this, other sites that promote home improvement will often compose lists of the best DIY bloggers out there. The great thing about DIY blogs is that you get a sense that the author behind the before and after pics is a normal person with average DIY skills — just like the rest of us!
Ready to become inspired about your next home DIY project? Here are four great blogs for DIY homeowners:
View Along the Way
View Along the Way is highly entertaining because the author of the blog isn’t afraid to admit that her enthusiasm doesn’t necessarily mean everything goes to plan. Kelly started the blog in order to chronicle her efforts to fix up a disclosure property and turn it into a home. Her husband Andy helps her out with the projects that she shares with us.
The great thing about this blog is that the author clearly has fun trying out new things around the home. On the about page, she displays self-deprecating humor and tells the reader anecdotes about her husband’s reaction when she shares a new zany idea. It’s fun to see how this writer doesn’t take herself too seriously.
Projects on the site include how to make any lamp cordless, a $157 laundry room makeover, and even budgeting advice. What makes this site truly unique is that you get a real sense that Kelly is the girl-next door. As well as the DIY tips, Kelly shares information about her family and financial situation. It’s pretty much a guarantee that the ideas on this site can be completed by people on a tight budget.
The bloggers behind the impressive DIY blogging site DIY Projects are Lauren J and Dave Matthews, a married couple who are passionate about DIY. They actually met at a DIY convention, and insist it was ‘love at first craft.’ Adorable, right? They both started out as individual bloggers with their own sites, and DIY Projects is the result of merging the content of their previous sites together. So you’re getting two sites for the price of one, essentially.
The advice found on this blog isn’t limited to DIY projects. It also boasts money-saving, cooking, and organizational tips. The main navigation menu is divided into six categories: Decorate, DIY & Crafts, Fun & Entertaining, Personal Projects, Reusing & Recycling, and even Weddings.
The blog boasts some valuable ideas on how to maintain your pool, DIY that maximizes space, and even how to store your kid’s toys neatly. When you’re browsing the sections, it becomes clear how extensive the site really is: the DIY & Crafts section alone boasts nearly two hundred pages of blog links. The sheer abundance of information will keep any enthusiastic DIYer entertained until the end of time!
A Beautiful Mess
The site A Beautiful Mess is maintained by sisters Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman. This is a more general lifestyle blog targeted primarily at a female audience that contains articles about a range of topics from photography to crafts. This is the kind of site that would make the perfect Instagram, with its clean and well-lit images.
It is truly a feast for the eye. Even the About page makes you feel more like you’re browsing the Vogue website than a crafting site. Elsie and Emma have hired a range of experts who contribute to the site and help maintain the written content. The blog exudes professionalism and serious dedication to women’s lifestyle.
The section you’ll really want to explore, however, is their Home Decor section. It is full of vibrant pictures and eclectic ideas that will give any homeowners endless inspiration. From Embroidered Photo DIY to making your own daisy pillow or cactus oven mitts, this is a really fun site to browse. Bigger projects include a tutorial on how to create a kid’s bed from scratch, renovating a laundry room, and making a bench.
The variety of lifestyle tips and DIY information on this site will inspire anyone: men and women alike.
A Design Story
This DIY site is sure to entice any enthusiastic reader, considering the fact that the owner used to be an interior designer. After graduating from the Ringling College of Art and Design with a Bachelor’s degree in Interior design and working in the industry for seven years, Lindsay gave up work to become a stay-at-home mom and professional blogger.
Through A Design Story, Lindsay shares her DIY projects and ideas with the world. The site includes a range of craft, painting, and seasonal projects. The craft projects include how to make your own yarn wreaths and customized tote bags, the painting section shows you how to paint stripes on walls (not for the faint-hearted), and the seasonal section contains a fantastic selection of ideas about how to make your home really cosy throughout the seasons. One of the stand-out articles in this section is when Lindsay shows you how to make DIY Christmas ornaments! They are made of glass, and the finished result is very sophisticated indeed.
